“Rear View Mirror” or „Archeology of Everyday Life“ a working title.
On transformation.
The mirror – the front page of a newspaper – reflects topics of our everyday life.
My piece “Creased Front Page” presents the viewer with a particular day in history – in 1968 – the day when the construction of the multipurpose hall in Erfurt began, it is also a view of past events, presented and controlled by the media.
The longer the sculpture is on display in the open, the greater the distance in time will get from the actual date in 1968, while at the same time due to wear and tear through the elements, the piece will develop a patina, the print and images will fade, and the sculpture in that way become a visual reflection of time’s passing.
In my work I focus on a seemingly useless, outdated object, an old newspaper page, old news, over and done. But what interests me is the perception of “reality”, reality as presented by the media, reported history, recollection, and what’s left in our collective memory (and since the discarded front page is now trash) an abstraction thereof. There is also the image of a paper sheet, picked up by the wind, performing a poetic dance until it is carried away by the wind.
Another feature of the sculpture is a sound installation, which consists of several hidden loudspeakers, playing one sound each and so making the sculpture an acoustic environment.
The sounds increase and decrease in volume, much like a tidal movement.
The three sound elements are:
1. Wind, mixed with sounds of newspaper printing press.
2. Footsteps, approaching and walking away
3. Paper sheets being crumpled
